Chaos reigned at the Palace of Peace and Contentment.
Alex took one look, and told Kenzie to go and get cleaned up, then found the manager, who was staring around at his beautiful foyer with a look of dazed incredulity.
‘Most of these people aren’t hurt but all of them could be carrying any manner of germs, so could you stand up somewhere and tell all those who are not injured to go over to the swimming pool and shower in the cabana there?’ He told the man. ‘They can wash their clothes and put them back on, then stay outside in the sun, unless they have an injured child and need to return to him or her.’
The man nodded.
‘I’ll send some staff to keep them in order while they wait,’ he said. ‘We have tried to keep the badly injured away from the less injured, but it’s hard with so many people.’
‘You just get the uninjured out, and have staff down by the stables to stop more uninjured coming. I know they’ll want to look for loved ones, but right now we need to help those who need help.’
He left the manager climbing a few steps to get above the crowd and went to where people lay on a line of beds.
They must have pulled every unused bed from the suites above him. The man with the injured shoulder was sitting on the end of one of them, talking quietly to a woman who lay on it.
Someone—one of the nursing staff presumably—had fashioned a sling for him, and given him pain relief for him to be speaking so clearly in what was probably his second language.
He’d make a handy interpreter, Alex decided, and asked his name.
‘Lamon,’ the man replied, smiling brightly.
He’d definitely been given pain medication.
‘Have you spoken to this woman?’ Alex asked.
‘It is her back, she cannot move her toes,’ Lamon said.
‘The hospital?’ Alex asked, and the man shook his head.
‘Water all through it, though the building is still standing. But the helicopter, it is all right, up there on the top,’ Lamon told him.
Which meant that they could get the badly injured to hospital on the mainland if they could find the pilot.
He’d moved to the next bed, where a man lay on his side in the recovery position, while an older woman, he presumed a nurse, was washing mud from his body.
‘It’s hard to tell if they’re hurt, with all the mud,’ she said, then her eyes filled with tears.
‘My family, down in the village, all the people are saying the village is gone.’
Alex patted her shoulder, checked the man’s pulse and wondered where, in the Palace of Peace and Contentment, he’d find a stethoscope, thermometer, and boxes of gloves.
At least!
‘Here we are,’ a bright voice said behind him, and, while his body thrilled to the voice, he turned to find Kenzie, not only clean, and with the small child now strapped to her back, but pushing a trolley with a goodly array of medical equipment on it.
